The Ethical Challenges of Universal Basic Income
We do not live in a utopian society.
We do not live in an idealistic society.
This is the 21st century.
This calls for EQUITY over EQUALITY.
The notion for a Universal Basic Income, UBI is blatantly unattainable nor sustainable in the long run, and history does not lie. While the ultimate goal is to attain civil rights, UBI is certainly ineffective in achieving this.
Finland’s failed economic experiment in 2017 has resulted in the country’s economy to be in shambles now! UBI will only lead countries into a failed experiment, a grave mistake!
Firstly, while there have been claims that UBI has brought about financial stability and security among populations, I’m here to counter with the harsh reality that, UBI DOES NOT BRING SUBSTAINTIAL CHANGE IN THE PRESENT STATUS QUO.
HOW ARE DEVELOPING AND UNDER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES MEANT TO ATTAIN UBI, A SCHEME THAT CALLS FOR INCREASED GOVERNMENT FUNDING?
WITH EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO GOVERNMENT FUNDING, THIS MEANS THE RICH BECOME ULTRA RICH AND STARTS YET ANOTHER CHAIN OF CORRUPTION AND ECONOMIC IMBALANCE. It must be equity over equality!
Secondly, UBI claims to attain civil rights.
HOW IS THIS ANY DIFFERENT FROM CURRENT GOVERNMENT WELFARE SCHEMES AND POLICIES, THAT ARE TARGETED AT KEY, SPECIFIC ISSUES, AND ADDRESSES THEM WITH MORE EFFICIENCY! THEY HAVE SHOWN IMPRESSIVE AND MORE SUCCESSFUL RESULTS THAT UBI HAS EVER SHOWN IN THE PAST
Thirdly, FEASIBILITY! UBI costs an astronomous amount of money which will only bring about a moral hazard to governments! Increased taxation will lead to more public dissatisfaction, protests, and civil disorder. The Greek debt crisis of 2015 is due to the government's fiscal policies that had too much spending! UBI CALLS FOR THE SAME!
Moreover, UBI would mean this social welfare schemes have to BE CUT, this will cause PUBLIC UPROAR! MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE BEING BENEFITTED BY CURRENT GOV. POLICIES! BRINGING IN UBI, A SCHEME THAT HAS FAILED IN THE PAST AND WILL FAIL AGAIN, WILL ANGER PEOPLE, WILL CAUSE MORE HARM TO PEOPLE THAN GOOD.
Universal Basic Income is therefore, unattainable and will cause social disorder, and I strongly stand against the need for UBI.
