LGBTQ Bias
A lot has happened in the past years which everyone has different opinions on but this article isn't long enough for them all, so this article will give a point of view on one of the topics, the controversy around the LGBTQ community. The more significant topics with the LGBTQ like the in-person effect, the social media effect and tie together loose ends by stating what it means.Something people have seen in the news is legislation against LGBTQ where governments make laws that passively goes against LGBTQ from making people go into the bathroom matching the gender assigned at birth or banning transition surgery and transition therapy. The public view may seem hostile towards LGBTQ but that is just because the hate is the loudest voice but there are supporters out there. The argument against LGBTQ is that “it's wrong for the same gender to like each other” while usually, the counterargument is something like “So people being happy, to be themselves in a world of uniformity is bad?” Everyone just wants to conform to what society wants them to but there's some who want to express who they are and what they like but there are people who try to villainize LGBTQ when it's just people who want to be themselves to let all that bottled up emotion come out and have someone to support them along the way. but the major effect of LGBTQ bias is social media.
With social media, there is a lot that could be talked about but I'll just stick to talking about Meta (Facebook and Instagram), and X (Twitter). Starting with meta from the article “Meta is failing its LGBTQ+ users, says new GLAAD report” on advocate written by Christopher Wiggins on March 27 2024 12:24 PM EST says that in a revealing report named "Unsafe: Meta Fails to Moderate Extreme Anti-trans Hate Across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads'' from GLAAD on metas failure to moderate content targeting the LGBTQ community. People in the LGBTQ community face insecurity offline but also online and metas failure to properly moderate content that villanizes or hurts LGBTQ just adds to it. X (twitter) isn't any better than meta on these issues either in an article titled “Social Media (Except Twitter) Improves LGBTQ+ Safety, More Steps Needed: GLAAD'' on Advocate written by Trudy Ring on June 15 2023 9:00 AM EST says that “Twitter is the most dangerous social media platform for LGBTQ+ people, and four other major platforms are still not doing enough to protect LGBTQ+.'' Now I've touched on the social media aspect but there's still a few more things to talk about.
One thing I wish to touch on is the ‘rise’ of people identifying with LGBTQ the rise is not caused by existing LGBTQ converting normal people to LGBTQ its caused by more words being able to be put to how they feel, the article “More Americans identify as LGBTQ+ than ever before, according to new Gallup poll” on Advocate written by Trudy Ring on March 13, 2024, 6:00 AM EST sheds more light on this topic. But how this all affects the LGBTQ community well for one it causes them to close up and bottle up their feelings pretty much taking a vow of silence but that's on the better end on the other end is well… Yeah, that can probably be guessed. So the bias of LGBTQ in legislation, public view, and social media has been touched on.
With one of the big topics that had a lot of controversy around it is safe to say that LGBTQ isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, it's just people trying to be happy and trying to be themselves yet some people don't understand that and harass LGBTQ causing people in the LGBTQ community to just bottle themselves up. That being said don't hate on LGBTQ for being who they want to be, support them cause maybe just maybe good karma might come.
