School is the place where we discover our talents and grow our minds, right? No. Wrong.

School is the place where we learn we are not equal, and we find out that we will never be equal.

In PE, we learn that each of our bodies perform differently than the way other's bodies do. We learn from our peers that because we are different, we are not equals and we are imperfectly made.

In English, we learn that some of us have difficulty with writing our thoughts. Our words are not used well, our thoughts are worthless, and our minds are lesser and anyone else’s mind.

In art, we quickly discover that people cannot always easily translate mental pictures into hard-copy art. No one can translate the same; no one is close to being an equal.

At lunch, we learn that if we don’t sit at a particular table, we are worthless compared to those who do. We are considered nothing next to those people.

In the halls, if we do not dress in the right brands or styles, we are seen as ugly. We learn that the way we act and look determines our value. And how is that equal?

We grow up. We graduate from school. We continue to sub-consciously ask ourselves, “What is MY value?” We are taught throughout all of our schooling and life that we must look, act, live, and learn a specific way in order to be treated “equal.” So I ask you, what is “equal”? Does “equal” even really exist?
