On boats you need to be safe and wear right gear, so you won’t get severely injured while out on the boat. This gear includes life jacket, life raft, handheld VHF radio, fire extinguisher. It is important that when you are finding the right size safety equipment that it is the right size for you, it is also important that you have some way to communicate with other boaters or people on land, you also need to let someone know the general area you are going to be in just in case you get injured.

Statistics show that in 2014, the Coast Guard counted 4,064 accidents that involved 610 deaths. 2,678 Injuries and approximately $39 million dollars of damage to property as a result of Recreational boating accidents. The fatality rate was 5.2 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. This shows that every year the number of deaths increase the more people don’t follow boating safety.

One incident where someone didn't follow the boating rule was the second fatal boating accident in a week occurred after four boaters went missing Sunday night. One of the victim's body was found Monday morning near a house in Stuart and two more victims were discovered near St.Lucie. Only one of the 4 were found. Two of the victims who died were a Sheriff's Deputy and his 9-year-old son, Jayden Jones. On April 3, a New Jersey boater Stephen Graga, age 70 died after his pontoon boat flipped in rough waters. According to U.S. Coast Guard data, there were 70 boating deaths in 2014 in Florida, the latest year for which statistics are available. That was the highest number since 2007, and up from 58 in 2013 and 50 in 2012. Florida ranks first in the nation in both boating accidents and fatalities. These incidents are the rising numbers nationwide for boating accidents. This is a concern, and worth addressing.
