When I was a kid I thought that Valentine's day was just a day where you give out cute cards and candies. I thought this until I started middle school. Suddenly Valentine’s day felt like a day where you have to find love or else everyone will think you're just pathetic. I legitimately thought this until I started high school. Suddenly Valentine’s Day felt like another day of the year.
What exactly is so wonderful about Valentine's day? I won't lie, I do understand why the holiday exists. I just don't get why everyone says it's so special. It doesn't feel as important as everyone says it is. It really just feels like any other day of the year.
Why do people care so much about Valentine's day? When you think about it, Valentine’s Day just feels like another corporate holiday. It just feels like an excuse for people to buy candy and cards for their significant other. I don't get why people decided to dedicate some random day in February to giving gifts. Why wait until some random day in February when you could just do this on any other day of the year?
As I was writing this, I sort of realized something. Valentine's day feels kind of like Christmas but with a different font. Just think about it for a minute. The two holidays have similar roots, you buy and give gifts to the people you love and care about, and the color red is very prominent during both holidays. It's almost just like Christmas in a way.
I know what you are probably thinking. You probably think that I'm crazy or very lonely or too dumb to understand such a wonderful holiday. I do understand why Valentine’s Day exists, I see the appeal of it, and the origins of the holiday. I get why Valentine’s Day is considered an important holiday. I just don't get the whole corporate side of it.
How did such a cute sounding holiday get so corporate? That I don't know. Maybe it's because of capitalism, maybe it’s because of societal expectations, maybe it's both. Who really knows at this point? I don't even know either, I’m just some random student writing an opinion piece.
But what exactly is so special about Valentine’s Day? Well it's really just some random day in February. It's just another day of the year. It’s a day that I both see the appeal of and don't see the appeal of. A day that I think is kind of unnecessary, not really important, and very boring.
