It's All The Same Love
The topic of gay marriage is very controversial these days. There seems to be many arguments between the people of the United States over this one idea. Both sides lead their arguments with valid points, but for the anti-gays their biggest reason is “more people will be tainted with same-sex thoughts.” This reason is atrocious because there are many people with two moms or two dads that are straight as can be and aren’t bothered by their parent’s sexuality. I think there are better reasons for gay marriage than against it and I’m here to show you some.
First, many of the people that you know today from television shows or music are gay. For example, Ellen Degeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, Elton John, Chris Colfer, Adam Lambert, etc. all lead very successful lives! They are high in celebrity status and their shows or music are highly popular. So, why can’t they marry their partners like your other favorite celebrities? There’s no difference between the two matches of man and woman, woman and woman, or man and man. It makes no sense that they lead such amazing lives, but can’t even do anything as trivial as marrying the love of their life.
Second, religion should stay out of this issue. Yes it may go against your faith, but why must you stop anyone from marrying the same sex. A priest can just say no to marrying two people who love each other because of who they are inside. Why is that supported? All these people want is to be united by law and treated as equal. Just because your religion doesn’t accept the idea they cant get married in a church at all? That makes no sense to me! What if your priest came up to you and said that he could “fix” or “cure” you? What is there to “fix?” There was nothing broken to start with, nothing to fix! They also tell you that God made you and that you’re special when you were little. Why is it all of a sudden a crime to like someone of the same sex? After they finish saying that God made you in his image and that he loves you they turn around and target a same-sex couple and tell them that God hates them. They say their going to hell because of their sexuality and everything they had just said is forgotten. Why when someone finds out that you’re gay does God stop loving you. Why does God hate you because of it, didn’t you just say he made me in his image and that he loves me?
Third, society is a big factor in these arguments. As much as it is frowned upon, some teenagers are proudly gay and show it. Some keep to themselves and think that everyone will hate them if they know. This makes it so hard for people to come out because they think everyone will judge them. They think they will be bullied and judged on who they are inside. They have no time to be or find who they are because they are too busy either being bullied or worrying about being bullied. People I know use the word “gay” as a demeaning word and is used daily. This makes no sense, there’s nothing wrong with people who are actually gay! They are just like you and me, why can’t they have the same rights as us? Personally, I have many friends that are gay that were scared to even tell me, let alone their parents or all of society. They hide it for as long as they can, especially if they know their family or friends are against gay rights or marriage. One of my friends was brave enough to announce it on Facebook, and he says school has actually gotten better, because he’s not keeping it in. He said that all of his friends have accepted him and no one judges him on it. Everyone that is thinking or does come out hopes it’s like that for them, but they can never be sure. These kids walk around hallways at school facing a world sometimes so hateful that some would rather die than be who they are.
Fourth, everyone is equal, so why don’t we show it or accept in society and laws. Some people would rather stay voiceless instead of fighting for something they believe in. They aren’t brave enough to fight for people who have had their rights stolen. You aren’t exactly the same as the person next to you, but that not important. There’s no freedom until everyone is equal. Isn’t this country all about freedom and equality? Underneath everything, it’s all the same love and it’s about time we showed it. These laws affect the lives and families of these people and their partners. If one of them gets sick and doesn’t have health insurance, the doctor can’t let them use their partner’s. They can’t share their rights or earnings like your mother and father can. They don’t have the rights your parents do, so why do you have to punish them more by judging them.
Overall, There is nothing to hold against gay marriage or rights. It’s never going to affect your marriage if you’re straight. These anti-gays are against equality in America not just gay rights or marriage. Isn’t this the land of the free? What does putting down people on their sexuality solve? The usual arguments that are against it just say things as blunt as “it’s not natural” or “it offends God.” How do you know what offends God? How do you know what’s natural? I hope you see these points as logical and change your view, if you are controversial about it.
