Photoshopping the Medusa
We are all delicate creatures. No singular component defines or forms us; little bits and pieces are the glue that hold us together. Memories meld together to form our minds. Experiences sculpt our personalities. People pile on to hold our hearts together. All make us who we are, but… One tiny little hit can cause a tiny little crack that destroys us. And that tiny little hit can come from any tiny little thing. A ruined day, a broken friendship, a lonely moment, anything-- anything can be the hammer that crashes down upon us when we least expect it. Sometimes the hammer is even wielded by those we thought we knew, we thought we trusted, we thought were wonderful. But no. Sometimes people photoshop themselves; altering their words, their actions, to worm their way into our lives, only to remove the editing later and reveal the medusa that is their soul. Or at least, that’s what I think. People are like that sometimes. You learn to depend on them, you learn to accept the photoshop. But then the hammer comes. And it lands right on your heart. Then the shards go flying. One shard, all the times you laughed together, gets stuck in your skin. Another shard, all the times you confided in them, scrapes your lungs. A third shard, all the moments you two said would last forever, leaves its scar upon your soul. The shards go flying. They hit your mouth so you can’t speak your shock. They hit your eyes so you can’t see the truth. They tear your delicate little soul apart. And the funny thing is, you never see it coming. Never ever...
