Those Who Deserve What They Worked For
We live in a society where an athlete’s tweet makes magazine headlines the next day, a politician’s private life starts fights, or the shirt that a celebrity wore becomes the next trend. Public figures play a large role in all of our lives and it’s impossible to prevent the influence they have on us. Celebrities, politicians, entertainers, athletes, and business leaders should not be seen as a category of people, but as individuals that have worked hard for their success in life and are willing to make a difference. They deserve credit for their accomplishments, but not in a sense that heralds them equal to the gods.
Public figures are always photographed or interviewed, so it is not difficult to find a celebrity’s opinion on certain topics or the actions they take. The development of technology has also acted as a catalyst and the young people who use technology the most, are most influenced by public figures. At the 2015 Oscars, Zendaya was criticized for dreadlocks she proudly wore. Giuliana Rancic made a rude and racist comment about them on Fashion Police, but Zendaya did not allow her to get away. She strongly stood up for herself, defending the hairstyle she and her family have embraced for years. This event taught many people of all ages, including myself, a valuable lesson not only on stereotypes, but standing up for what is right. Events like this can serve as inspiration for young kids and adults alike. Public figures can be used as a device to show young people they can aim high, put their opinions out there, and they can succeed and dream, through determination. All audiences can receive hope and inspiration from their favorite singer, football player, or dancer. It never hurts to dream and work for what you want, with the knowledge that your role model succeeded.
Often times, famous and successful public figures were born with their talents. However, it is truly the effort that matters in the end. Fame and success does not fall from the sky, we all must work for it. Public figures did not simply wake up and became famous or made a difference in the world. It took time, stress, and effort to get to the place they are now. Because of the public attraction they receive, it is common for many to be harshly judged on the internet or social media for the smallest situations. Recently, Gigi Hadid, a model, stated her opinion that hate does not bring her down that her career is still a work in progress. When we should all respect and be amazed by the path talented people take, many still choose to leave disrespectful comments, videos, pictures just about someone’s opinion on gay rights or even just because of the way another talks. What these public figures do and their lifestyle may seem easy, and a dream life some of us want. But in reality, everyone has a story behind the career path they traveled, and pain and tears behind the stunning pictures on Instagram or a happy tweet on Twitter. No one should shame them for what they do, but rather appreciate and look up to them as an example for the possibilities and opportunities in our world.
