why students should not drop out
I had an argument with a high schooler the other day.
He said that he works at Walmart and makes $6.00 an hour. He was thinking about dropping out. I said to him if he stays in school there are benefits like he would make $143 more per week than if he dropped out.
He said, “Ya but thats 1year from now.”
Then I said to him, “That's only 4 months, and you are doing good. You have a lot of friends. And you are good at sports. What else do you like to do?”
Then he started saying, “ I like to make stuff.” I said to him that if he like's to make stuff he could probably get a scholarship. Because he has great grades and he is making honors and then I asked him what he likes to make.
Then he said to me, “ I like to make things with my hands.”
I said to him “Do you like to work with wood?”
He said, “ Ya.”
I said “Why don't you go to collage to be a carpenter?”
If someone drops out they are making a very bad choice and they might never get a good
paying job.
When a student drops out of high school they have a lower chance of getting a good job because most places do not hire people if they do not have their high school diploma, and they might not know how to do that job because they did not stay in high school to learn it.
Students should not drop out because, high school graduates earn $143 more per week than high school dropouts. College graduates earn $336 more per week than high school graduates and $479 more per week than high school dropouts. Several thing that could happen are dropouts comprise a disproportionate percentage of the nation's prison and death row inmates. 82% of prisoners in America are high school dropouts. There are no benefits to dropping out of school. If you do places will not hire you and give you a job because you do not have your diploma.
A popular reason that teens drop out are friends and peer pressure from other high school drop outs. Family or other outside relationships can influence teens to drop out of school. This also goes for the teens that choose to drop out to join a gang or to be accepted in other teen groups and street communities all over the country and world.
About 3 months later I saw the high schooler that I talked to about not dropping out and he said the he had graduated and is planning on going to college in the fall. He said after the talk I had with him he started talking with his friends and family and said that if he had dropped out things would have been a lot harder.
