Turn Off Phones, Open Up Books
It’s pretty clear, that from the increase on TV, the Internet, and social networking people aren’t reading for entertainment nearly as much as they use to. This essay is all about the reading and how it’s good for people! I’ll talk about how it can improve people’s health, encourage people to read, and how it helps with younger kids. First I’ll show how it improves people's health.
Out of 1,00 U.S adults, 28% haven’t even read one book yet this year, as stated from the Huffington Post. Research from 2009 at the Mindlab International at University of Sussex, reading is the most effective way to overcome stress and to chill out. An experiment they did showed that it took a teenager only 6 minutes to calm down one they started reading. Recently published research from the online issue of the journal Neurology, reading helps keep the brain sharp. They did a research of 294 participants that died at an average age of 89. The participants who were readers experienced slower memory decline, a 32% lower rate of mental decline. The participants who were non-readers in their previous life had a 48% faster mental decline. As long as you’re not reading a “page-turner” reading can help you sleep better! Bright lights, including electronics, signals to the brain to get up. Along with those benefits it boosts imagination and creativity, improves people understanding, can understand new information better, and people learn a lot of new topics! So now that we know reading really is good for people, I’ll try to encourage people to read!
There obviously are still people out there who don’t like reading, but want to start there are many ways to get into it. Book clubs can be a good way to start. Being with friends and reading a book can make it easier to start. Setting a goal to read a certain amount in a specific time also can. It’ll make people feel like they accomplished something. Lot’s of times, just finding a good book is a good way to start! According to the bookstore Barnes and Noble, their 2013 best sellers consist of the books “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt, “Inferno” by Dan Brown, “The Signature of All Things” by Elizabeth Gilbert, “The Lowland” by Jhumpa Lahiri, “How the Light Gets In” by Louise Penny, “And the Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hosseini, “The Luminaries” by Eleanor Catton, “The Circle” by Dave Eggers, “The Good Lord Bird” by James McBride, “Someone” by Alice McDermott, “The Interesting: A Novel” by Meg Wolitzer, “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by Neil Gaiman, “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson, “Bleeding Edge” by Thomas Pynchon, and “TransAtlantic” by Colum McCann. Either look up books and lists like that or just simply go to the local library and look for books that seem interesting. So now that we know it’s beneficial for all kinds of peoples health and that I’ve tried to encourage people to read, I’ll say how it can help kids!
From the ages 2-5 are the years where kids learn the most. Teaching them to read or reading to them would be a wise decision for whoevers teaching them. It teaches them to write better, concentrate better, and process information better, which I think is all basic necessities for learning later in life. It can also help for them to develop other interests. It also has the ability for them to understand how others think and feel better and makes them more open to new ideas, it can help with public skills and having better team work when they’re growing up. They can stay informed (probably later in life, like reading newspapers) and will open a window up to the world and they’ll talk well. Referring back to the other paragraph that states older people who read more have less mental deterioration, It keeps their minds active well into old age A study in England, Scotland, and Wales of the British Cohort Study made up of 17,000 people starting at birth. When the kids got to the age of 16, they all took a reading test. The ones who did read got higher test scores than the ones who didn’t.
After stating all these facts, I’m sure it seems pretty obvious reading really is good for all people! Seeing how it’s good for people’s health, trying to encourage others to read, and that it’s good for kid’s health too! After people read this article I hope they’ll decide to read more than just sitting in front of a TV, being on the Internet, or laying around social networking!
