Basketball Rims Should Be Twelve Feet

The dunk: the single most exciting play in basketball. Or, at least, it once was. Coming in all forms, whether it’s off the backboard, one handed, backwards, or the coveted alley-oop, the dunk exhibits both grace and extraordinary power in one quick motion. The problem is that over the years, players have gotten bigger and bigger, while the rim remains at 10 feet. With players now commonly at or above 7 feet tall, many players can grab the rim without even leaving their feet. The dunk has now become so common, and often so effortless, that it is becoming increasingly overshadowed by the 3-point shot.

The logical adjustment to make here is to raise the rim to 12 feet, forcing players to actually try to dunk, which could make the game far more exciting. While players’ shots may suffer at first, the adjustment for a professional should be fairly quick, and therefore not a problem. The only possible outcome of this change is an exponential increase in excitement and profit for the NBA.

Just think about it. Would you rather see Blake Griffin barely hop in order to dunk, or would you rather see the power that he exhibits in a dunk competition on a daily basis? That would be the kind of power needed to dunk on a 12 foot rim.

I rest my case.
