The fire burns, blaring, blazing, in front of me. Little sparks of flame and paper dance
and float up into the black sea of stars, ­burning out
and fading as they turn to ash. The heat melts my
numb bones as I lie in the wet grass. I feel the
moisture seeping through my T-shirt, kissing the
skin on my shoulder blades as I shiver. I watch the
flames break off and float like helium ­balloons into
the Milky Way, to the places my eyes can't go,
disappearing forever. I feel the little sparks hitting my skin, searing my flesh. Paul yells, “Hey dude,
get up!” But I'm content, blurry, burning, wet,
And Free.
