California
When I see you now and then
Our friendship tries to mend.
After you moved away
Your spirit was gone
And I miss it.
You were always tall
I was always short.
Such a big difference back then
Not mattering now,
Though a difference has over come
Bigger and longer.
A couple hundred miles
Separate us now.
Not talking
Barley recognizing
The ones we were.
For California,
Stole you away
And raped you
In its sunny warm rays.
I will never forget that night
At your house
The nail polish on your face,
For you thought it was good war paint,
But grimaced in pain
While rubbing it away.
We see each other
Almost every summer.
Awkward and shy
The time goes by.
Whisking away,
No more do we want to play
Those foolish games.
I miss back then
When we were all close friends
Reminiscing now
Is hard ground
And may need a plow
To break the thick ice.
