"Sara, stand up straight."
I did.
I'm sorry, mommy.
But I can't for long.

You dropped you're purse?
Oh, I'll get it for you.
After all,
I'm already half way down there.

"Sara, sit up straight."
I did.
I'm sorry, daddy.
But I can't for long.

You want me to reach up
and touch the sky?
I can't.
Because I'm not as tall as I should be.

"C'mon, Sara. Stop slouching."
I tried.
I'm sorry, bro.
But I can't for long.

You want me to roll around on the ground?
I can do that.
I'm already almost in a full circle,
after all.

"Sara, why are you sitting like that? Make your back straight."
I did.
I'm sorry, sis.
But I can't for long.

You want me to stand up straight.
I can't, I can't, I can't.
Atleast not for long.

Don't worry, mommy.
I'll be alright.
The doctors will fix it.

Don't worry, daddy.
I'm just fine.
They'll straighten out
my spine.

Don't worry, bro.
I'm gunna be okay.
I can't wait to see
my x-ray.

Don't worry, sis.
Nothing will happen.
They're just gunna
cut me open.

And don't worry,
cousin.
I won't be disappointed
When I'm not magnetic.

And maybe someday
maybe someone will say,

"Sara, stop standing so straight."

The author's comments:
This poem is about my being diagnosed with Kyphosis, which means I'm hunchbacked. Everyone told me to stand up straight when I couldn't. The second part is about the coming surgery I will have to make my spine straight. I did include my name because its how the poem played out and I like it that way and don't mind it.
