Merry Christmas
Through the window,
a glimpse into the life of a ‘perfect family’.
Gathered around the fireplace,
lights twinkling on the tree in the corner.
You stand outside, in the frozen cold,
snowflakes dusting your coat.
You long to enter,
to take your place at the piano.
Hesitantly, your hand reaches for the door handle.
Flashback.
Screaming.
Yelling.
Angry words, full of hate.
Tears streaming down your face.
‘Out’, he screamed.
And when you stood still,
He lifted his hand, with a look of rage,
And you ran,
never to hear from them again.
It’s been a year.
A year of silence.
You look in the window again,
pull your hand back.
Maybe next year.
