Visions on the Sea
Among the sea-steeds manes he saw
A vision born aloft;
A delicate form in the frothy foam,
Ethereal beauty soft,
Yet hard and strong as the crashing waves
In the towering heart of the storm,
Who ken only the speech of cliffs and beach
And never have known careworn.
No earthly being, but a sea-god’s dream,
From the distant shores of the fae;
Where the naiads play in the whispering waves
And the ages come down to the days.
It looked at him, the spirit did, with eyes
Like an island dawn;
And then away, like a wisp of breeze,
The splendid thing was gone.
In the lonely reach of distant seas
The waves forever roll;
And the ocean spirits dance so free
In the bright dawn’s golden glow;
Beautiful as the water itself, whitecaps
And calm, deep blue;
Untamed as the sky and distant as stars,
Such is the wave-fae’s tune.
