Butterflies
I thought that they were leaves at first
two butterflies colored like day-old sunlight.
One led the other through the sweet singing air
downward they drifted than upward in flight.
So alike were they that one could have fit
inside the other and they would have seemed
like one creature moved by a common heartbeat
to any eye that caught the scene.
But one leads leads ever onward! onward!
glancing through the air in languorous rush
and the other it follows onward onward
trailing so close but they never quite touch.
