Virtue (A Phillis Wheatley Write-Like)
The treasure of thy precious chest so rare
Thou must protect until thy betrothal
If thou might seek the tender hand of lust
Search not here or thou shall commit a sin
Thou shall be consumed in wallowing grief
If thou should not reveal thy belov’d jewel
Then a day shall come when thou shall know bliss
If thou should attend valued chastity
With patience, thou shall earn worshipped pleasure
Court her then, as a gentleman of love
Cherub of the soul to lead to rapture
O, don’t lose faith, thy seraph shall guide ye
On through the pearly gates of desire
Thou, proper queen, shall burn with fi’ry passion
A fierce, unknown love in thy swollen heart
But guard virtue as thou would a gemstone
Teach thy offspring the same noble gesture
To endure and passion to sequester.
