Masked
Am I the only one left alive?
Isn’t there anyone else?
I’m surrounded by people who can’t be real
I may not be real myself
But if that’s the case, then who still breathes
In and out, in and out
Isn’t there anyone left alive
Who knows what this is all about?
I look around and all I see
Are masks, painted stiff and stern
I have made several to wear myself
Each outward person takes her turn
I show the student to my mother
The lover to my friends
The bookworm to my father
I think I see a trend
Each mask made meets a different face
Each face knows a different me
So what do I wear when I’m all alone?
Which mask was made for me?
And how do I recognize others’ masks
On faces I see every day?
How do I know that the friend I’ve made
Has always been that way?
I can’t be the only one left alive
The only eyes shining behind the mask
To seek another hidden one
And find, that is my task
