The Little Things
It’s the little things
that make life work living, like
smashing a crosscourt forehand
and watching yellow bits drift then burrow in your strings
delivering the final words of a speech
followed by a thundering applause
yawning as you finish a poem
at 1:00 in the morning when even the moon
craves sleep
strumming your first bar chord
with callused fingertips, numb and swollen
awakening to Led Zeppelin
and telling the sun “Today I’ll show him that I really do care,”
and it takes a wise being
to realize it.
