The battle
Families forewarned, friends torn
Bullets blasting, muzzles flashing.
Men weeping, forever sleeping.
Boots splashing, mortars crashing.
Wounds seeping, enemies creeping.
Soldiers praying, clothes fraying.
Wind whipping, whiskey sipping.
Flags flying, drones spying.
Hands shaking, stomach quaking.
Eyes restless, expressions relentless.
Splitting headaches, tearing heartaches.
Smoking pipe, grief striped.
Fire bright, unforeseen blight.
Blood caked earth, what is it worth?

My dad inspired me to write this. He used to be a navy seal for the U.S. navy and military is common throughout my family history.
