The Truth About Poetry
Poetry is not
A happy box that you go into to make yourself feel better.
It is
An Escape
From that box.
It grabs you by the shoulders and
Rips everything out of you and
Slaps it on a page for your eyes to see.
It screams at you and
Cries at you and
Yells your faults to your face.
It shows you how human you really are.
It shows you
Your ugly emotions and
Your crooked heart and
All the brokenness inside.
It gives you plenty of things to hate yourself for,
And yet…
When all is done,
It turns around,
Looks you square in the eye,
And says
“You are so human…that you are truly beautiful.
Love yourself.”
That
Is what poetry
Really is.
