Escape
Out here the world is different from
back in that stale room, where
they tell me to be
the best (they think) I can be.
Out here it’s just me
and the track – with
desire pulsing through
feet, legs, arms, lungs, veins.
I lace my shoes slowly and
wake each muscle with a stretch.
I inhale anticipation and
exhale sweet relief.
My need lifts my legs like
puppet strings and swings
my arms in time with
the beat of my body.
Today I won’t let
the clock own me. I’ll
watch the sky turn
from blue to red.
I’ll belong to something
else – a carnal pleasure
I’ll measure in
sweat and steps, not
A’s or praise from those who
let their bodies fade to grey
like the skin on
last weeks´ fruit.
Out here, this is me,
blood rushing, feet
aching and, lap for lap,
this is my escape.
