Black Eyed Susan

I love the Black Eyed Susans
when it's just the black eyes left--
love the lovely flowers,
but they best be left bereft.
I keep them in the kitchen
and I set the on the flush,
put them all in vases
after plucking from the brush.
I love the Black Eyed Susans
in a way I can't explain.
Love all that they stand for
and the image of disdain.
I love my Black Eyed Susan--
she's a beauty in despair.
Love her when she's crying,
when the Black is all that's there
