Suspicions
I walk into the store
With my black clothes; grungy
When people look they see
A teenager trying too hard
Yet still walking with an air of confidence
I go to the nail polish isle
A guard looks at me suspiciously
Disapproving
My chains do not appeal to him
He looks at me like
He expects me to grow up
Before I even step out of the store
I see a blond woman
Walking down the same isle
She’s sophisticated and pretty
An angel in designer clothing
A pure businesswoman
She avoids eye contact
The guard doesn’t eye her
suspiciously
Like he does to me
That’s not fair
I turn back to my shopping
I look at the selection
And I pick blue
Cause blue looks cool on my nails
I feel the guard’s eyes on me
He’s still suspicious
I shrug and walk away
I stop to pay at the register
And I hear an alarm
Oh
Someone is stealing something
I see the guard
He flickers his eyes to the entrance
I bet he expects to see me
At the front of the store
Shoplifting
But instead he sees what I see
Pretty blond, sophisticated businesswoman
Being yelled at by store management
Her blond head bowed in shame
Hands clutching a golden necklace
What a ridiculous thing to do
I shake my head in disbelief
And pay for my blue nail polish
Then I walk out carrying my prize
I sneer at the guard
He seems to be in shock
I leave without looking back.
