Everyone's a Critic
My dog won't eat my poems.
Of course, he'd gladly chew my sneakers,
The sneakers I wear to gym class,
But he draws his line at free verse.
My dog won't eat my poems.
It seems he doesn't like the taste
Of unindented stanzas, rhymes.
Or all this empty space.
My dog won't eat my poems.
The very meter makes him sick,
But I go on, writing along,
'Cause everyone's a critic.
