Hope
I sit in a cold, dark place
Yet, I hold a flame in my hand.
If touched to just the right places
And handled in just the right way,
This flame will grow and brighten
The place that I am.
This flame will grow and warm
The place that I am.
I have hope, a word that
Has built a nation
Up from the ground, pulled it up
By its bootstraps
To a time and a place
That is no longer dark or cold,
But bright with the flame
That I hold in my hand and my heart,
And warm with the flame
That has grown in the hearts
Of the people in this place with me,
And this is the time
That I truly can see
The light at the end of the tunnel,
The sun breaking through the clouds,
And the tears that come to my
Eyes now
Are the ones that are filled with
Joy at how far we’ve come,
How far we will go,
And the uniting power of one simple idea
That in a cold, dark place
A flame will always glow
In the hearts and the hands of the
People, a nation, a light in the dark.
America, what it means now
Is hope.
