The Girl With The Red Wagon
Yesterday I went to the store
And I saw a little girl
She was wearing ripped, dirty clothes
She was pulling an old red wagon
Loaded with things
A rusty, dented bucket
A bundle of thin blankets
A tiny baby
She looked so thin, it was like she had never had food
She coughed, a raspy, hacking sound
She dug through a trash can and pulled out a mouldy crust of bread
And she gave it to the baby
There was nothing else edible in the trash can
So she pulled the wagon away
Looking so tired
I went back to my car
And took out my bag of a dozen donuts
And ate them all.
