A School Morning
5 a.m.
red-tinted darkness
beating with a pulse
right behind my eyelids
the music plays
my footsteps sway
jam spread on rye toast.
6 a.m.
stiff denim jeans
then a checkered skirt
a black silk screen tee
slightly damp hair
the smell of something burnt.
7 a.m.
red is for the lipstick
glitter on my cheek
brown dipped in black ink
the clock ticks promptly
each minute slowing
to the breath of my own heart.
