Why is it that even the caged bird sings,
gracing its captors with its melody,
regardless of its gift of wings?

Within confinements, and so much missing,
and an ever-growing longing to be free,
why is it that even the caged bird sings?

They’ll never fathom the pain they bring
when they bar you in and refuse to see,
regardless of your gift of wings.

It’s kept from flight and though it stings
its tune is light hearted and never lonely.
Why is it that even the caged bird sings?

Regret and desire, always lingering,
and time after time they ignore its plea,
regardless of its gift of wings.

And though its kept from nearly everything,
the hope of the future is its company.
That is why even the caged bird sings,
regardless of its gift of wings.

Sometimes, it's the hope of the future that keeps us going, and often that hope is enough to make all the pain and hardships we endure worth it in the end.
