Flower Girl: or, Ophelia
Hello, my love. Do you remember me?
Or are you too lost in the throes of lunacy?
And if so, is it all a farce?
Or was I never really the delight of your heart?
Remember how you came to me, madness on your breath?
What a sight you were to see; it scared me half to death!
Ah, but when you saw, you dropped the act,
revealed your plan, fact for fact.
And how it thrilled me; I kept your trust close to my heart.
I thought our troubles had ended, but I know now it was just the start.
Were you mad, my dear? Is that why you did it –
struck a blow, and killed my father with one hit?
You said you loved me, but–
You said you loved me, but no one heeds an unhinged tongue
(And isn't that what you wanted all along?)
The water looks so pretty from up here
– does it sparkle so where you are, my dear?
Oh! I see my father! Stretching out his arms –
he will keep me from all harm.
I can see you, too, my love; here, I'll jump, and you both can catch me!
I know you will –
I know you will –

I fet very unsatisfied with Ophelia's fate in the play Hamlet, and it made me feel better to have imagined her as in on Hamlet's plan in the first place, which is what I have incorporated into this poem. I haven't changed her story, but I like this version much better.
