To My Mother
When I walked into Room 602:
the Intensive Care Unit,
And noticed tubes stuck everywhere but your head,
Mask over your face, and the words coma and stroke in the
Same sentence from your doctor'
I knew nothing would be the same.
When I walked into our house,
And noticed the walker lying
Before your feet'
I knew nothing would be the same.
When I called your name three times,
And still, you didn't answer'
I knew nothing would be the same.
When I was born, you gave me the
Name Brittany, but thirteen years later,
You couldn't say it. You couldn't speak'
I knew nothing would be the same.
When nurses, doctors, and maids were hired
Just to get you through the day and
To give me a break'
I knew nothing would be the same
Now here you are,
Three years later.
Getting better everyday.
I thought nothing could be the same.
Like you always said:
'Anything is possible.'
