Graduation and All
By the road to the new chapter of my life
under the canopy of the blue
clouds driven from the
coast—a cold wind. Beyond, the
wet sands, ocean shores
green with seaweed, floating and tangled
patches of sea grass
over the small creatures of the sand
All along the road the tannish
brownish, forked, upstanding, twiggy
road of tourists and surfers
with dripping, shaggy hair
Full of life, slowly
walking through life—
They glide the world unaware
of how time passes so quickly
and before they know it
they will move on from this town.
Now the day has come for me,
the fast lane cant move fast enough.
One by one cars are drifting through lanes—
It quickens: clarity, the sadness that comes with knowing I am leaving.
But now the stark dignity of
a new life—Still, the profound change
has come upon them: rooted they
grip down and begin to awaken
Imitation of “Spring and All” by William Carlos Williams
