A Soldiers Vision
I’m on the boat not far from shore,
The beach its self only stretches 7,000 yards long,
Its gentle slope forms a crescent,
While its sea wall stand a brave 12 feet tall,
Behind the beach few villages lay,
Colleville, Vierville and St.Laurent.
Our task was simple,
Secure the beach head,
It lay between Port-en-Bessin and river Vire,
Then all that’s left is to proceed to St.Lo,
So im on a boat close to shore,
My mates and I feel ten feet tall.
The boat is now reaching the shore,
To my surprise there lay on the sand,
Suppressions that will rip us apart,
250 yards from the water line,
Gate like structures stand strapped with mines,
200 yards from the sea shore,
Heavy logs lay angled at us,
In front of the boat in a scary line,
Five foot tall hedgehogs entombed in the sand.
It starts now the boat reaches shore,
The doors lower and the machine-guns roar,
We jump out into the sea but my brothers in arms,
Drown due to the extreme tonnage,
The mortar fire a defying roar,
Blowing my brothers up high and low,
The medic try to save one man,
His leg is gone and guts are out,
He call out “Mama!” like a little child,
But disappears real quick,
As a mortar rips him clean.
We manage finally to secure our goal,
Yet had to pay our price in blood,
Now I sit and look back to this day,
The words that still haunt me until this day,
“Mama” he screamed as I lay there still.
