In The Mirror
I keep looking in the mirror'looking at myself'looking at the shadows behind me' waiting for a thin line of vanity to creep in from my family tree. I analyze my calm blue eyes following into the quiet creases around my lips and dropping myself into the crevices beneath them. These superficial features, to them, make me who I am. Make me the daughter of a preppy mother and a hardworking father. They mold me into the solemn girl in the corner the world chooses to see. Bending and breaking my body into their form. I keep looking for my broken bones in the mirror, for the bruises placed upon my face and in turn find clear skin and blue eye shadow. I keep looking in the mirror' looking at myself' waiting for the shadows to swallow me back in' looking at them laughing.
