Christine
A warm, cuddly friend on a cold winter's night-
warms my toes
and desolate state of mind.
the best listener of all as I pour out my troubles,
sob against her soft fur
matted by my tears
listen to that familiar sound of comfort-
a cat purring.
And I cannot understand-
how she can absorb
so much
of my pain,
and still be
happy
carefree
comforting-
And I cannot understand-
the unfairness of it all,
as I realize that she is no longer a kitten
(that she is growing old)
Over nine years, but it feels like just yesterday'
that day she came home:
frightened and wide-eyed,
when I sat with her and took her into my arms
Just one small token of gratitude
For all the kindness she has bestowed upon me.
How
Is it fair that
One so good-
should live such a relatively short life
as compared to humans
(the makers of war)
I love her so much.
Too Much.
And somewhere in my selfish heart,
I wish that she could stay with me forever.
