Murder of a Tree
Once evergreen, now 'ever brown:
life has long since fled.
A century at least has passed
since sap this old tree bled.
Foul and fawn once rested there
under sturdy trunk and bough,
but long ago the killers came
to shape pine to plank somehow.
No more to grow and drink the rain,
the murdered tree lies hollow.
Its spirit now has gone away
where only breeze may follow.
