Song for the Wanderer
The paths have vanished,
The wanderer gone;
And weeds now grow
Where his feet once trod.
Alone in the forest,
Wild and fey
He passed as dawn
Preceded day.
Where now does he walk,
In dark cloak long?
What fields hear
His morning-song?
He has gone through gates,
Black and gray,
He passed as dawn
Preceded day.
Oft eagles would cry
As he strode away
Wondering, wishing
That he could stay.
Now they search in vain
Along his way, but
He passed as dawn
Preceded day.
In halls of kings
He solemnly stood
And marveled they
At his noblehood.
At their sides in battle
He loyally stayed; but
He passed as dawn
Preceded
Day.
Wandered he long
O’er hill and vale;
Through mountain-crest,
And windy gale;
But no longer does
He journey their ways; for
He passed as dawn
Preceded day.
Where now the lonely,
Grim-faced man?
With sword of kings
And lore in hand;
He wandered long
‘Mong lonely ways; but
He passed as dawn
Preceded day.
And now in vain
The eagles cry
From lonely peaks
In the clear blue sky
For the lonely wanderer,
Who now is gone.
His words have faded
From the song.
Alone in the forest,
Wild and fey
He passed as dawn
Preceded day.
