Amber Stars
Upon the farthest reach he sat,
And ne’er a tear did fall;
The sea wind came to sing his grief,
And dry his eyes with its call;
The ocean surged, blue and green,
Against the fading day;
Just as it had a week ago
When it took his lady away.
Taken from him her laughter,
Her merry smile bright;
The way she tossed her sable hair
Amidst the dancing light;
Taken, too, the question
He’d thought but never asked;
And now she was gone forever,
Forever beyond his grasp.
He sat alone, upon the rocks
Beside the dark sea-strand;
And clenched again the calloused fist
That had last touched her hand;
Singing, singing softly,
That no one else might hear;
Giving with grief his last goodbye
To she that he held most dear.
‘I wished you wouldn’t leave me,
I pleaded that you would stay;
But I could never sway your heart
When wandered you to fay;
Your eyes, they gleamed like amber,
Wild and full of light;
And now I never shall see them,
With all their glory bright.
