That Day in the Ghetto
As my mother walked me to school
We got lost in the crowd and I held my breath
I heard a gunshot in the courtyard
And that day in the ghetto there was death
The guards moved me away from my dad to live with my aunt
As I left my father’s arms, I wanted to scream
At my Aunt’s, all of my little cousins ran around
And some days I was really mean
But most of the time, I just sat with a frown
Then the guards invaded our home so I held my breath
They took all my cousins and my aunt
And that day in the ghetto there was death
I was sent to my other aunt’s house
And the time spent there would never tick
The guards took me to the prison to be deported
But then my father got sick
When my aunt arrived in the prison
I greeted her but held my breath
They called her name to aboard the train
And that day in the ghetto there was death
My ill father and I managed to escape to an old house
We celebrated the Passover and I held my breath
He would not eat and was going to starve
And that day in the ghetto there was death
