Rescuer

Heart on the carpet, blade in hands, she falls to the floor

Thoughts pushed aside, all she knows is she can't take it anymore

The lonely sound of voicemail on the phone

And he tells her she is now alone

No-one will rescue her

The pain in her chest is so deep she can't bear

The loneliness and hurt all ground up in fear

The sadness behind eyes, the tears can't be shed

It cannot be solved by crying in bed

She draws blood

Intense as Twilight, burning holes in her wrist

Bloody cuts and raised scars that no-one could miss

For this reason she wears hoodies, everything long sleeved

The sobs growing louder, her shoulders, they heave

It falls everywhere

The blood won't stop flowing, she's alone and she's scared

She'd cut way too deep this time, not even aware

Pain in a haze, she seeps to unconsciousness, not registering

The shocked sound of his voice, just home from work, unbelieving

There she is

His baby sister on the floor, surrounded by blood of her own

Gasping in fear, his eyes clouding up, he looks at his phone

Hands shaking, he stares at the bright, blinking screen

Sixty times she had called, sixty times she had screamed

Needing help

In the distance, an ambulance loudly screams

Then the house is swarmed by chemical-smelling EMTs

They scoop up his sister and carry her away

He recalls her this morning, pleading, "Brother, please stay"

She needs me

At the hospital they let him in, but not in her room

They tell him there's stitches, and overlooking doom

"There's a serious chance she won't make it"

No more socks reading 'Brothers are the world without cheese'

Whatever that means

It's nearly three in the morning when the doctor comes back

He's smiling, says, "She's OK! Looks like we handled that"

His heart leaps ten feet in the air

For Jesus has taken away every care

Hallelujah

Twelve months later she returns to her bedroom

The carpet's replaced, everything's new

She smiles at her brother, her rescuer, who sent her to treatment

And looks down at her sun-tanned arms, thanking God for her freedom

Amazing
