The one with the little blond braids
clings to the lapels of her mother’s coat
Words, faces, tears
Blanketing her senses
Wood and flowers
Blanketing her father
In a room that smells of her grandmother’s perfume
“I’m so sorry, my dear”
“He was a wonderful man”
“Why don’t you go play with the other children”
She ignores the meaningless sounds
And stares at her only friend

The author's comments:

This narrative poem tells the story of a little girl who has just lost her father. She is at his funeral and is experiencing all the aspects of a funeral that I know I have experienced at the few I have been at. I may not have lost my father, but I think everyone who dwells on the thought of it can really know how strongly they would grieve from such an awful loss.
