Stretch Marks

I look down at the stretch marks
that now run up and down my thighs
And I wonder if it was the pints of ice cream
from such a cliché heartbreak
or if it was just the misleading love
Are they my streaks of pleading
as I reached out much too far
for far too long
Trying to pull you back to a seat
that you never really occupied
Next to any empty spot
I could see you across from me
And though we were face-to-face
the distance between us
meant so much more
