Where I'm From
I am from a subdivision of woods and a lake,
from the people making doors clank the frame,
I am from a white feathery powder sitting on the lawn.
I am from a duplex where the neighbors band is heard,
from tires scratching the streets trying to beat the snow,
I am from a ocean blue playset outside.
I am from a family diverging,
from smothering paper with chicken scratch from a granite tip,
I am from a town where kids get ecstatic when snow falls.
I am from the people who care for me and treat me with kindness,
from the peers distracting me from my objectives, from football to homework,
I am from the people trying to bring me down with their words.
I am from a family inside that duplex,
from the subdivision that treasures the teal,
I am from the town that clenches the woods and the lake.
I am from people trying to force negative energy on me,
from people opening the door and hearing, “I’m leaving, have a good life,”
I am from a town I can hear sounds of my name though the streets.
I am from a state known for the cold,
from a family that cares,
from a town known as my home.
