The Summer I Was Five
The bumpy road vibrated from under us
As my brother and I lounged in a wagon the color of a fire hydrant
Drowning in the plethora of beach toys surrounding us
My brothers eyes widen and his smile fills his entire face as we arrive
At Grey Pond with tons of other kids and families
We beeline from the red wagon to the clear and fresh pond water
Of course we hear “Come back I need to put sunscreen on you!!” from Mom
Her cold white hands lather us both up with the oily sunscreen
Not a ray of sun will hit our skin, at least not until we get into the water
So my brother and I sit and play, as the tiny grains of sand fill our bathing suits
As the day grows older and the sun starts to fall
Finally packing up the multiple beach toys back in the red wagon
