Your Right
You say that it doesn’t matter,
That you can do however you please,
That it doesn’t pertain to you and your life.
You say that it’s part of your rights.
Well I say you’re right.
You’re right,
You don’t have to vote,
You don’t have to participate.
That’s your right.
But then,
I counter,
You claim America is the greatest country in the world,
That our freedom should be something we value,
That it’s part of our rights.
Well then, how,
I say a little louder than before,
How can you neglect your freedom,
Your right to vote,
To decide what happens?
To other people around the world,
They suffer,
Unable to have their voices heard,
Rocks, flames, bullets,
All thrown on two sides of a civil war.
And yet, you claim it’s your right,
To not vote,
While those who can’t yell loud enough over the bullets suffer,
Their inability to do what you throw away so casually tears their country apart.
So tell me again,
That your vote doesn’t matter,
That you can get by without it,
That in the grand scheme,
In the midst of millions of votes,
How yours doesn’t matter.

Hi! I am an eighteen year old writer. I'll be going to college in the fall and I'll be studying political science. This poem is really important to me because of what it means, especially in today's world.
