Walks outside seem harmless,

Where on the road to haven

the ground buoys

and the sky glistens,

Where in the voice of the branches a call is heard,

Trees that croon inhale, inhale, inhale,

blend with the wind,

Ringing victorious in fraudulence

over naive me.

And sickly scent takes hold of me,

Embedded,           afloat,

in every nook of my body,

Endlessly prodding, reddening, clawing, shredding,

my spirited insides,

Till the tissue and       flesh revive,

till haze in the head scatters,

Till the sun beckons

and the bird coos again,

    the next day.

The author's comments:

This piece was written as an assignment for English class. The assignment was to take the form of a poem we read in class and personalize it. I started with the form of "A Noiseless Patient Spider" by Walt Whitman and adapted it to fit my vision. Enjoy!
