what is love?

love is what makes us human, right?

We’ve all heard the storied

prince charming kisses the girl

they live happily ever after

love is what makes us human

everything we’re taught tells us this

every book we read-

girl falls in love with guy

guy falls in love with girl

no matter what happens in the middle

they will get their happy ending

because love is what makes us human

but why is love inherently romance?

why are those considered interchangeable?

why is it said that if you reach the age of thirty without dating anyone you’ve lived a loveless life?

is it not love the first time a mother holds her child?

is it not love when a group of friends sit together in the sunshine, their laughter mixing with the bird song, creating a cacophony of music?

isn’t all this human?

when i say the word ‘love’ the first thing that may come to mind is a couple out on a date.

a happy laughing couple out on a date taking a walk, eating at a restaurant, in a movie theater

this is not the only form of love

yes, love is what makes us human

our love for ourselves

our love for what we do

our love for our people, our friends, our family

our love for our pets

our love for the environment or money or achievements

this is also love. this is what makes us human.

The author's comments:

Everything around us is hyper romantic. Every movie or tv show always has a romantic subplot, every book seems to have a love triangle, and even walking through a school hallway, everything seems catered towards amatonormavity.
