Finally Free
I was happy
My family was wonderful
My friends were the best
They always had my back
That I can attest
Funny how life can change all that
Aren’t families supposed to stick together?
Aren’t they supposed to stay by your side?
If that’s so true
Then what the f*** happened to mine?
I grew up, no longer naive
Think you can manipulate me?
Order me around? F*** that
Your words are something I used to believe
I was in a dark place
And guess who put me there?
I had no one,
my only friend was Despair
Finally made the climb out of Hell
Didn’t take days, took years
But now I finally feel well
Because now I have nothing to fear
But fear itself
Oh, you thought you could break me?
Turn me back to who I used to be?
Think again
Because now
I’m finally free

A poem to celebrate freedom obtained through the painful process of maturation. The naïveté and credulous optimism of the first verses are contraposed with a cynic realism in the last verses.
