An Unlikely Pair
An enormous oak tree stands in my backyard,
Massive in height.
At a glance, you would think it could touch the clouds and talk to the moon.
The oak tree and the moon’s fondness of each other grow.
Yearning for each other during the day,
Cherishing one another during the night.
The oak tree is like a house.
Providing a home to the creatures who live in my backyard
Small ants looking for leaves to take back to their queen
Birds snatching twigs in order to make their nests
The small creatures finding refuge in the oak
Climbing its durable arms to reach its peak.
A safe space in the colder months
The moon admires this about the tree
It’s stability for all the creatures,
Whereas this is what the tree admires about the moon
Creating the tides that keep humans afloat
It’s stability to illuminate the night,
Every night.
From where I stand under the tree
It truly does look like the oak is connecting with the moon.
Although the moon is small compared to earth
It engulfs the oak with its size
Making the massive oak look like a mere branch.
And sometimes at night,
When the only things I can see are the tree and the moon,
I hear them idly chatting,
Whispering things I cannot make out,
Knowing the tenderness they have for each other.

I wanted to capture the innocence of love and admiration. This simple poem about the relationship between an oak tree and the moon displays the innocence of one's first love.
